The Unconventional Guide to Work

Life’s too short to be bored at work. We can help.

10 Songs to Play Just Before a Job Interview

You’ve sent off your application and you’ve landed an interview for your dream job. As the day approaches, you find yourself feeling more and more nervous. And that’s completely understandable – there’s a lot riding on this one conversation.

Your mortgage.

Your future.

Your parking space.

It’s important you come across as clever, confident and collected, but that’s hard to do when you’ve already chewed your nails down to the quick with nerves. So how do you psych yourself up?

Before I go in for an interview – or in fact any kind of event or activity that makes me nervous –  I play some music to pump myself up. Here are some of my favourite songs to get ready for kicking ass and taking names.

Watch the videos below, or get the playlist on Spotify.

I Love Myself Today – Bif Naked

“I love myself today, not like yesterday.
I’m cool, I’m calm, I’m gonna be OK”

Bif is one of my music idols. She is pretty amazing. This is my favourite song of hers, and it always makes me feel as if I am ready for anything.

Into Battle – Ensiferum

Ensiferum are what is called “folk metal”, which is a metal band incorporating aspects of traditional folk instrumentations and song structures. Even if you’re not into this genre, you might find this appealing. The song is about marching into battle, and it’s great for psyching you up!

Lose Yourself – Eminem

If you had one shot, or one opportunity,
to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment.
Would you capture it? Or just let it go?

Who could forget the infamous Marshall Mathers, and this Academy Award-winning song from his movie 8 Mile about the struggles of following your dreams. Many critics consider it one of the finest hip hop songs of all time.

Stand Up and Fight – Turisas

Another “folk metal” band, another great anthem about marching off for war … er, the interview room.

You Will Know My Name – Arch Enemy

This song by powerhouse death metal act Arch Enemy is all about not being afraid to stand out and be yourself. Be memorable.

Survivor – Destiny’s Child

I’m a survivor, I’m not gonna give up,
I’m not gonna stop, I’m gonna work harder.

This song is about a breakup, but the lyrics are pretty applicable to any situation where you have to deal with something that’s difficult. Now go and kick some ass!

Million Dollar Bills – Lorde

Because when the interviewer asks you what your salary expectations are, you should be aiming high:

Manowar – Fighting the World

Manowar are the greatest, cheesiest metal band of all time, and all their songs are about standing up for yourself and fighting for what you believe in (in their case, “True Metal”. In your case, a new job).

Remember the Name – Fort Minor

Fort Minor is the side-project of Linkin Park’s co-vocalist Mike Shinoda. This song came out in 2005 and is still an insanely popular hip hop number, being used by several sports teams and advertising companies to express courage and determination.

Eye of the Tiger – Survivor

The theme song from Rocky, and the first song to appear on every workout playlist ever created. How can you NOT feel awesome while listening to this track?

(That is a rhetorical question).

What’s your ultimate YOU GOT THIS song for that crucial job interview?
